Ministry Spotlight: Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist and Education in Virtue

Jesus Christ is the Mercy of the Father, the Face of Mercy turned toward each one of us.  Truly, “Mercy Changes Everything” as the inspired theme of this year’s Columbus Catholic Women’s Conference so beautifully puts it.  There is no true new evangelization where the mercy of Christ is not preached.  It is this new evangelization which was the spark that set aflame the desire that began the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist in 1997 and that drew them to Columbus, Ohio in 2011.

At St. Michael School in Worthington, Ohio, the Dominican Sisters of Mary bring the witness of their religious life to the children and school families while serving as teachers and principal.  At the heart of their contribution to the education and formation of young people here lies the Disciple of Christ – Education in Virtue® curriculum brought to the school community by the Sisters.

The Disciple of Christ – Education in Virtue® is a Christian curriculum structured on the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas regarding the virtues and gifts of the Holy Spirit.  It helps youth learn about the virtues so that that they may form the habits and dispositions necessary to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.  It has been developed in response to the call for a new evangelization, firmly conveying the reality that happiness is found in a life of holiness.

“The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it” (CCC,1816). This is especially true in the Year of Mercy. It is time for women, in their unique way, to reach out to the heart of humanity to be instruments of Christ’s mercy in imitation of Our Lady.  As St. John Paul has said: “there is nothing that man needs more than Divine Mercy — that love which is benevolent, which is compassionate, which raises man above his weakness to the infinite heights of the holiness of God.”  (Poland, June 7, 1997)

As we prepare for the Columbus Catholic Women’s Conference, let us be instruments of mercy to those in need and invite them to join us for an encounter with Christ on February 20th.  As disciples of mercy, let us welcome them to a moment of meeting Christ’s embrace and image for others that mercy truly changes everything.  The Sisters will see you there.
